Dedication of newly reconstructed groundwater supply facility (May 24, 2004)
The Southeast Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority has completed a state-of-the-art water disinfection system at a major groundwater source of supply located in Harding Township. The treatment employs ultraviolet light to destroy pathogenic bacteria and other potentially harmful microorganisms.
This groundwater supply facility was completely reconstructed and re-named Magyar Well after a charter Board member of the Authority, who passed away in December 2002. Alfred Magyar was an original Board Member of the Authority when, in 1977, it purchased and assumed operation of the water system previously owned and operated by the Town of Morristown. For twenty-five years, Al Magyar was a driving force in the rebuilding and improvement of the water system.
“No Board member of the Authority cared more about the reliability and the quality of the water supply than Al Magyar,” noted the current Board Chairman, Adolf Schimpf. According to Schimpf, “Al was a champion of the reconstruction of this water supply as well as numerous other capital improvement projects throughout his twenty-five years of service.”
During, and after retiring from, a distinguished career with Jersey Central Power and Light Company, Al Magyar brought a private sector model to the Authority. His goal was to make SMCMUA a leader in the industry and one of the best managed utilities in the State.
The Magyar Well makes available nearly one million gallons of water per day to all of the customers in SMCMUA’s service area. Ultraviolet light treatment or UV provides an additional barrier to potential biological contaminants including bacteria, spores and viruses. The Well also employs corrosion control treatment to prevent leaching of lead and copper from home plumbing systems and final disinfection with chlorine to protect water in the distribution system.
